The Digital Age and Disinformation28 May 21
On Wednesday, May 26, 2021, the Turkish Heritage Organization hosted a virtual webinar featuring a discussion on, “The Digital Age and Disinformation” with experts Lukas Andriukaitis and Daniel Castro. Lukas Andriukaitis, is an associate director at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab) based in Belgium. Daniel Castro currently serves as the Vice President of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) and the director of ITIF’s Center for Data Innovation.
First, to open up the conversation, Lukas and Daniel discussed the importance of understanding the role that disinformation can play in the digital age. With increased reliance on technology through the global pandemic, the speakers discussed how the reliance and integration of digital avenues and technologies like that of educational opportunities, public health and more provide wonderful avenues for increased connectedness, while also warning of the role that disinformation, manipulation of digital media and more can alter the spread of reliable factions and information. Further, in the age of “deep fakes” or hacking, like that of the recent pipeline hack in the United States that greatly impacted the gas availability in the southeastern part of the country. Further, the panelists discussed the influence that the spread of disinformation can have on international security and the role of democracy in our elections.
The need for increased focus not only domestic cybersecurity programs but the need to integrate systems internationally is imperative. Finally, the panelists discussed the development of technologies like that of Artificial intelligence and the role that AI will play in almost every industry here and abroad in the near future and the impact this will have not only on the economy, and of course national security sectors, but almost every industry. Through a robust conversation, both Lukas Andriukaitis and Daniel Castro shared their expertise surrounding these developing technologies and steps that the average person can take to try to increase vigilance to false information spread on the internet.
