Turkish Heritage Organization (THO), Executive Vice President Ali Cinar was interviewed by Sky New Arabia on the presence of Turkish troops in Iraq.
Ali Cinar indicated that the presence of Turkish troops at the Bashiqa camp, in northern Iraq is the main point of contention. Commenting on the mission of the Turkish troops, Ali Cinar said that the troops are there to provide critical training for Sunni Muslim and Kurdish Peshmerga units so that a greater coalition of local forces can take part in the battle for Mosul – a geostrategic city controlled by ISIS. Cinar had argued that re-claiming Mosul from ISIS will play an important role in terms of bringing some stability to the region and ultimately degrading and ultimately destroying ISIS.
THO Executive Vice President said that the concerns of the Iraqi government regarding the presence of the Turkish military is unfounded because as its neighbor, Turkey has no long-term plans to stay in Iraqi territory and its concerns are only about border security. Cinar also said that among all the countries involved in the region, Turkey is perhaps the only one that truly cares about its neighbor’s solidarity more so than any other nation.
