Prof. Aybet shared insights for the future of the Turkey-U.S. relationship
On March 14th, the Turkish Heritage Organization hosted a private roundtable discussion in New York City with Prof. Gulnur Aybet, the Senior Adviser to the Turkish President.
Attendees included Ertan Yalcin, the Turkish Consul General in New York, current and former diplomats, leading scholars, and foreign policy experts from various U.S. based think tanks and academic institutions. Prof. Aybet spoke extensively during the discussion about Turkey's operation in Afrin, the future of Syria, and her insight for the future of the Turkey-U.S. relationship. The discussion was centered around Turkey’s pivotal role in the ongoing Syrian civil war, including conversation about the President Trump's outlook on Turkey’s military operations in northern Syria.
Furthermore, Prof. Aybet addressed questions about the requested extradition of Fethullah Gulen, in addition to questions about Turkey’s role in hosting nearly 3.4 million Syrian refugees. She also indicated that there have been distortions in some international media outlets since the beginning of Operation Olive Branch, requiring Turkey to better explain their reasons behind the operation.
