THO Advisor and former Ambassador to Bahrain Adam Ereli spoke with Al-Jazeera and CNN on the U.S.-Turkey relationship following Vice President Biden’s visit to Ankara

In his interview with CNN, Ambassador Ereli discussed the U.S.-Turkey relationship in light of Vice President Biden’s visit to Turkey. Speaking directly following Biden’s remarks at a press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, Amb. Ereli noted that Biden’s expression of U.S. support for Turkish democracy following the July 15th coup attempt was much needed. Ambassador Ereli emphasized that U.S. engagement with Turkey now needs to go beyond expressions of solidarity through development of a mechanism for senior-level discussion on the current issues at the center of the U.S.-Turkey relationship, such as the Syria conflict and Turkey’s request for the extradition of Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of having orchestrated the coup attempt.

In his interview with CNN, Ambassador Ereli discussed the U.S.-Turkey relationship in light of Vice President Biden’s visit to Turkey. Speaking directly following Biden’s remarks at a press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, Amb. Ereli noted that Biden’s expression of U.S. support for Turkish democracy following the July 15th coup attempt was much needed

In his interview with Al-Jazeera, Ambassador Ereli argued that Vice President’s visit had three main objectives; 1) to express the U.S. government’s support for Turkey’s democratically elected government; 2) to show gratitude to the Turkish people for their courageous stand in support of democracy on the night of the July 15th coup attempt; and 3) to lower the temperature in U.S.-Turkey relations and establish a way forward for clear and constructive communication between government officials in each country. On the subject of the extradition of Gulen, Ambassador Ereli emphasized the complexity of the process and the issue; he noted that there is an extradition treaty in place between both countries and a set legal process that the U.S. must follow when evaluating the extradition request. Ambassador reminded the audience that Turkey suffered an “enormous tragedy” and “crime of almost unprecedented dimensions” on the night of July 15th, and as a result Turkey is understandably eager to see justice.
