On October 31st, THO President Ali Cinar joined Anand Naidoo on CCTV America’s “The Heat”. Cinar told Naidoo that after a breakdown in relations in 2015, Turkey began to feel the negative economic effects of lack of trade with its northern neighbor. For this reason, Turkey wanted to see a build-up of relations once again.

Cinar noted that the process to improve relations began before the July 15th coup attempt, and while economic relations are positive, there are still disagreements between the two countries regarding regional security. Though Russia and Turkey have been discussing strategies for addressing the Syrian crisis, they still disagree on the role of President Assad. He told Naidoo that the U.S. and Turkey remain close partners regardless of Turkey-Russia relations, but there are a few issues, including Turkey’s request for the extradition of U.S.-based Fethullah Gulen, that continue to be tough on the U.S.-Turkey relationship.
