Photographer and documentary filmmaker Aliya Naumoff’s exhibit “Taking Refuge”, which documents the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis in Turkey, opened up at the Sol Mednick Gallery in Philadelphia.
Funded by the Turkish Heritage Organization (THO), Aliya joined THO President Halil Danismaz as she visited the refugee camps in Harran and Akcakale, Turkey in April. The project’s aim was to create awareness about the ongoing refugee crisis by shooting a short, new documentary about the lives of refugee women, particularly their incredible resilience. The documentary was published by theNew York Times, Huffington Post, and many others.
In addition to the members of the Turkish-American community, the opening reception for the special exhibition at the Sol Mednick Gallery drew many students and faculty members from the University of the Arts, Naumoff’s alumna. Naumoff informed the guests about the ongoing humanitarian crisis that has created more than four million refugees and became the defining challenge of the 21stcentury.
The exhibit can be viewed at the Sol Mednick Gallery in Philadelphia until October 23, 2015 followed by a THO sponsored North American tour with soon-to-be released dates.
