On Wednesday, June 24, 2020, THO hosted a webinar on “Local government response to COVID-19”. In presence Melis Borovali, Education and Protection Officer at the UN Migration Agency, and Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President. Due to internet issues, the Mayor of Gaziantep and President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, Fatma Sahin, was not able to join us.
THO was honored to host the webinar to stress the local government response to COVID-19 in the United States. As a moderator of this webinar, Melis Borovali led the discussion on matters related to city governance, civil society intervention, and the response to this public health crisis in Brooklyn, and New York City.
The 19th Borough President of Brooklyn, Eric Adams, began the discussion on the latest developments in addressing the pandemic locally. As a multicultural and highly dense location, Brooklyn is a unique environment within New York City. This rich microcosm presented many challenges for a local response during the outbreak. There, attention was particularly given to low-income communities, hospitals, essential workers, and small businesses during the pandemic. Eric Adams further discussed the critical role played by civil society in filling gaps for community support. Hence, community-based organizations provided services such as timely communication and translation efforts. Eric Adams concluded the webinar with a call for resilience, and cooperation between communities, cities, and nations
