Turkey's East Mediterranean Policy and Realities

THO webinar "Turkey's East Mediterranean Policy and Realities" with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cihat Yayci

On February 18, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cihat Yayci of BAU’s Maritime and Global Strategies Center engaged in conversation with THO about the situation regarding Turkey and its place in the Eastern Mediterranean. In explaining Turkey’s limited maritime claim, he cited historical, legal, geographical, and precedential examples of how Turkey is in fact not as revisionist and maximalist in its demands as it is perceived to be. Turkey is only standing up for its rights, while Greece is the actor exploiting the situation for its own maximalist interests, and many states like Egypt, Israel, and Lebanon lose from letting Greece go too far. After discussing Cyprus, UNCLOS, and the Eastern Mediterranean environment, Dr. Yayci recommended that Israel and Turkey form an agreement as well as for the international community to prevent the politicization of science.
