Exclusive Insight with Dr. Edward J. Erickson

Dr. Edward J. Erickson is a member of THO’s Advisory Board and is a Scholar-in-Residence at SUNY Cortland. He recently retired as a professor of military history at the Command and Staff College of Marine Corps University in Quantico, VA. A retired regular U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, Dr. Erickson was commissioned in the field artillery in 1975 and qualified as a foreign area officer, specializing in Turkey.

Dr. Erickson’s military service in artillery and general staff assignments included three tours in Turkey. He has received numerous military awards, including two Bronze Star medals and the Legion of Merit. Dr. Erickson is considered one of the foremost specialists on the Ottoman Army during World War I, and he is the author of numerous books on Ottoman military history, including Ordered to Die: A History of the Ottoman Army in the First World War (Praeger, 2000) and Gallipoli: Command Under Fire (Osprey Publishing, 2015). Dr. Erickson received his Doctorate in History from the University of Leeds.
