The Great Statesman and the Founder of Republic’s Legacy Will Always Continue to Inspire Reformers and Modernizers Throughout the World
Today, we are commemorating the 79th anniversary of the death of founder of Turkish Republic and its first President, a truly gifted and audacious military leader, and extraordinary statesman; the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, whose fundamental belief was that “sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the people”, holds a very special place in the hearts and history of the Turkish nation. It was him that led a national resistance movement after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire that prevailed against the threat of foreign occupation during the Turkish War of Independence. His inspiration, dedication and sacrifice led to the emergence of a new Turkish State, The Republic of Turkey, which he later called “my greatest accomplishment”.
Every year on November 10th at 9:05 am – the date and time of his passing (at the age of 57) – Turkey pauses to remember his greatest accomplishment and honor his memory. His legacy of military brilliance, strategic vision, and political modernization which are ingrained in the heart of Turkish nation, will always continue to inspire reformers and modernizers throughout the world.
As we commemorate this day, THO will always remain committed to improving and strengthening relations between Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s “greatest accomplishment” and its long-time ally the U.S. pursuant to Atatürk’s principles, heritage, and teachings.
“There are two Mustafa Kemals. One is me, the mortal Mustafa Kemal; the other is the ideal of Mustafa Kemal which will live forever within the heart of the nation.”
